What is a copywriter?

It’s everywhere one looks, often stares at us, in magazines, social media campaigns, during a TV ad, hair shampoo, or sometimes it can even be a heading that leads us to read a 10-minute blog post.

Copywriting is powerful. Copywriting is so important to us that it does not only tie in with marketing, it can be in journalism or just writing a simple blog.

Let us define the role of a copywriter: A professional writer responsible for writing the text, or copy, used in marketing and promotional materials. Copywriting is using words to persuade people to take some kind of action.

The fundamentals of copywriting:

The importance of a copywriter is to have fundamentals; one needs to have an understanding of the industry or the target market but also have knowledge of just how important it is to put words together. I have composed a list of fundamentals a copywriter in South Africa or just in general should know or do.

  1. Passion:
Charles Bukowski said if it does not burst out of you, don’t do it. That’s the truth, being a copywriter has to be a passion, something you like doing, not everyone can write five thousand words in a day. I have been writing short stories for as long as I can remember. Practice helps a lot: master writing 500 words, then 800 and off you go. If there is no passion, you will get bored.
  2. Write like you talk:
Okay, that might be controversial. I got in trouble so many times by writing the way I talk, English is my second language, let’s just say I had to learn the hard way. Yet it makes sense. If you are writing your own blog, you want to be known for who you are, and funny enough that’s how I discovered my niche. I am vibrant, bubbly and love telling jokes. You can imagine what kind of person I am. Have a look at some of my blogs to understand my writing. You need to be confident when writing. It comes by writing the way you talk.
  3. Research:
Okay. There’s passion and tone (style). We are forming the fundamentals of a copywriter here. Before you start writing, research needs to be done thoroughly, gathering some information. You want your content to be trustworthy, make research, and give yourself time. I first write my title, then think about which angle I would want to tackle, when that is done. I go and read articles or blogs which are similar. Checking trends in the industry is important. There are free tools like Google trends.
  1. Headings:
Headings are important when writing a blog, article or report. Having great headlines gives you a kick-start in understanding SEO. Your client might give you content but cannot come up with a title or heading. Tools like HEADLINE STUDIO from Coschedule will help. I make use of it all the time. The first thing search engines will pick up is the heading when scanning through your page, so practice coming up with a simple yet effective heading.
  2. Focus on the customer:
When dealing with clients, the main objectives are to offer them quality service and let them be part of the process. If you are writing your own content, then make sure you have the reader in mind. Just make sure it is reader-friendly, and it is related to the relevant industry. Make the reader go “wow that was written just for me”.
  3. Call to actions (CTA):
Copywriters need to understand the power of call-to-actions. CTAs lure the potential client to sign up, contact you or just make a purchase. CTA has to be the best sentence you’ve ever written, so practice, practice, your content as a copywriter needs to be attractive and effective and call-to-actions is the cherry in the center of that masterpiece.
  4. Copywriting tool kit:
Having a tool kit is important. No, no you don’t have to be a plumber to have a box of tools to use during a job, but like a plumber, it is important to have your tools in order and know which one to make use of for a particular job. Here is a list of my tool kit which I make use of daily. As a copywriter when looking for a job or planning your content you need to have effective tools.
  • Headline studio by Coschedule: I absolutely love it; it gives you insight on how effective your heading is. Even when you think you have the best heading under the sun, have a look at it; you won’t be disappointed.
  • Google trends: There are many tools on the web that will help you with trends and insight on the industry. I make use of Google trends. It can be tailored to what exactly you are looking for. It gives you daily, weekly and even monthly feedback on what the industry is focusing on.
  • Grammarly and Linguix: Okay, your written content is done. But you do not have a PhD in Victorian English, so you need help. Who do you turn to? Well, I make use of Grammarly and Linguix to check my work. Yes, I make use of booth tools. They both have their ups and down. One thing Linguix does that I appreciate a lot is they can reconstruct the sentence, which is awesome.
  • Keywords Everywhere: Oh, when I discovered this amazing tool I took it to town and abused the perks it offers. I have installed it on my browser, so you can imagine, it helps when doing research, so you know what to focus on. It will help when plotting your CTA.
  • MozBar: It is not free. Let’s be clear here, but if you can afford MozBar then your keyword will be on par with the best in the industry, MozBar offers insight on competition, it offers great page optimisation.
  • Express Adobe and Pexels: Images are important, to help the blog come to life. I prefer Adobe express which offers HD quality pictures and videos, Pexels is a free website offering great stock images, I just like having options. Sometimes it is difficult to choose the right image, but both tools offer trending images for the particular industry.

How to find a Copywriter job in South Africa as a freelancer?

How to get a copywriter job in SA? It’s not easy just like every other industry, one just needs to stand out and have a finger on the pulse. Below is my list of how to attract and find copywriter jobs.

  1. Create a website:
It is a must in 2023 to have a personal website. It’s the easiest way people can communicate or get in touch with you. Look at it as a digital CV. Your portfolio should be included, linked to your social media, and reviews from clients should also be visible.
  2. Personalise your Google profile:
You might be wondering what a Google profile is?  Well Google allows you to create a profile and fill in the information needed, so when people search for you or type your name on the search engine, it will pop up, focusing on having strong keywords e.g: copywriter in South Africa. I love the profile. I linked everything on it from my website to my social media.
  3. LinkedIn: When searching for clients or work, there is no better place than LinkedIn. You have so much information to play with. Type keywords, search companies in your city, then email the respected person, or forward them with a link to your website.
  4. Upwork or Fiverr: Not going to lie, the competition is tight on those platforms I hardly make use of it, but in the early stage I used to, got a couple of jobs I just could not relate with the platforms, maybe you can go and try it out.
  5. Bizcommunity: I like Bizcommunity. They offer great content, like trends in certain industries, what is hot, the future of the industry and even jobs available, give it a subscription.
